Lisbon, Portugal – In his final match as manager of Sporting CP, Ruben Amorim led his team to a thrilling 4-2 comeback victory over Braga on Saturday. The 39-year-old coach is set to take over as the new manager of Manchester United.
Amorim’s tenure at Sporting was a resounding success. He steered the club to their first Portuguese league title in 19 years in 2021, and then delivered another championship the following season. Under his guidance, Sporting are off to an 11-game winning start this campaign.
Sunday’s match against Braga provided a fitting farewell for Amorim. After falling behind 2-0 at halftime, he made tactical substitutions that sparked Sporting’s second-half rally. Goals from Morita, Hjulmand and Harder completed the comeback, with the latter scoring twice in the final minutes to seal the victory.
“This is Ruben Amorim,” said Portuguese broadcaster Azevedo. “The guy has luck and knowledge. He is going away yet everyone is with him.”
Amorim is now tasked with reviving Manchester United, who currently sit 13th in the Premier League. He will bring a talented coaching staff with him, including assistant managers Emanuel Ferro, Adelio Candido and Carlos Fernandes.
Despite his youth and relative inexperience, Amorim has proven himself to be a tactically astute and motivational manager. Sporting fans are sad to see him go, but believe he is ready for the challenge of restoring United to their former glory.
