Hungary Coach Collapses During Nations League

Amsterdam, Netherlands – Saturday’s UEFA Nations League match between the Netherlands and Hungary was suspended for over 10 minutes after Hungary coach Adam Szalai collapsed near the dugout.

The game was halted in the 13th minute when referee Jesus Gil Manzano called for medical attention after witnessing Szalai fall ill on the sideline.

Witnesses reported that the 36-year-old former Hungary international may have suffered a seizure.

“Adam Szalai fell ill in the first minutes of the Netherlands-Hungary match, but his condition is stable and he is conscious,” the Hungarian FA said in a statement. “Minutes ago, he was transported by ambulance to an Amsterdam hospital for examination.”

The incident left players and staff from both teams visibly shaken, particularly Hungary captain Dominik Szoboszlai, who was seen in tears on the pitch.

After a medical tent was erected around Szalai, the game was allowed to resume.

The Netherlands went on to win the match 4-0, with goals from Wout Weghorst, Cody Gakpo, Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners .

The result means the Dutch will finish second in League A Group 3, ahead of Hungary.

Szalai, who scored 26 goals in 86 senior international appearances for Hungary between 2009-2022, retired from playing in July and has been part of the national team’s coaching staff since.
