LIAM PARO is enjoying the role of hunted rather than hunter.
The 28-year-old Australian makes the first defence of his IBF super lightweight world title on December 7 in Puerto Rico against Richardson Hitchins. It will mark Paro’s second consecutive visit to the country having won the belt against 140lb knockout artist Subriel Matias in June.
In doing so Paro, 25-0 (15 KOs), proved he is one of the sport’s modern day road warriors having fought outside of Australia for the third time in four fights.
“Taking out the so-called boogeyman in his backyard made it extra special,” said Paro. “It wasn’t just about winning—it was about showing the world what we already knew. I’ll fight anyone, anywhere, the same way I did against the most avoided guy in the division [Matias].”
The southpaw now returns to the country which will forever hold a special place in his heart.
“Puerto Rico is a beautiful place with beautiful people, and I’m honoured to defend my title there. It’s special to return to the island that gave me the opportunity to become a champion. I’m ready to win over even more fans with this performance.”
Victory for Paro could lead him a showdown against current number three contender Jack Catterall. The Englishman and Arnold Barboza – who have been ordered to fight in a WBO final eliminator – are two fighters who have eyes on taking Paro down in 2025.
“I’ve always said I wanted the target on my back,” Paro said.
“Knowing that someone wants to take what I’ve worked my entire life for is even more motivating. I’ve stayed disciplined and focused, and my mindset remains the same—I’m always a contender. I know how hard this fight will be, but I’m ready to show the world what we already know. I’m one of the top guys in my division”
