Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres has addressed the transfer speculation surrounding his future at Sporting CP, amid the departure of manager Ruben Amorim to Manchester United.
Amorim’s move to the Premier League has fueled rumors that Gyokeres, who has an £83 million release clause, could follow suit and leave the Portuguese champions.
However, the 26-year-old attacker says he is yet to be contacted by anyone at Old Trafford.
“It’s very sad that he’s leaving, but of course we understand his decision,” Gyokeres told Fotbollskanalen. “He has of course meant a lot [to me] considering that he gave me that chance and that he made me develop so much.”
When asked about the Manchester United links, Gyokeres was dismissive, stating: “He [Amorim] probably has some strikers there already, so we’ll see. No, he hasn’t [contacted me]. It’s fun but nothing I attach any importance to because it’s talk and nothing concrete.”
The Swedish international, who has been a reported target for Arsenal, emphasized that his priority is to secure an important role and playing time, rather than a specific destination.
“That you get an important role and that you get to play. That’s the most important thing. There are other things that also need to be in place, but I’ll take it when it comes.”
Amorim’s departure from Sporting has raised questions about the futures of the club’s key players, with Gyokeres now addressing the speculation surrounding his own situation.
Arsenal and other interested parties will be closely monitoring the situation as the January transfer window approaches.
