JUST weeks after losing his unbeaten record, Liam Davies has revealed that he will continue his career up at featherweight. On November 2, in Birmingham’s Resorts World Arena, Davies lost his IBO super-bantamweight title to old amateur rival Shabaz Masoud. Even though it was a split decision defeat, in truth, the fight was never really close, and Masoud was a worthy winner as Liam struggled to pin him down.

Refusing to use the weight struggles as an excuse, Davies explained to BBC Radio Shropshire how it had just become a step too far, boiling down to 122 pounds.

“It was tight. The weight did kill me. And maybe the last couple of fights before that too. Maybe I should have made the decision earlier,” mused the 28-year-old.

Tall for the weight class, the Donnington man went on to explain how he had been walking around at 11 stone, yet skinning down to an increasingly difficult weight. He is not declining to credit his conqueror, Masoud, who was too sharp and smart, boxing behind the southpaw stance for 12 clever rounds. 

“I don’t know if my emotions overtook my boxing. I’m a man. I wear my heart on my sleeve,” continued Davies, addressing the pre-fight beef that seeped into the build-up

“A lot went wrong, but I’ve just got to accept it. But that’s what life is about. Having setbacks and learning the lessons from them. I’m still chasing the dream – but it will just be at a new weight.”
